Our mission:

Yale SNMA/LMSA is committed to building a community for current and future underrepresented minority medical students at Yale, nurturing an environment at YSM that supports these students, fostering connections between Yale and underserved communities in the greater New Haven area, and growing consciousness around issues of social and health equity.

Our History:

At Yale in 2012, representatives from Yale SNMA and Yale LMSA combined their efforts to form Yale SNMA/LMSA in an attempt to simultaneously provide community and development for underrepresented minorities of all backgrounds as well as tend to the needs of our New Haven community. The merger led to the creation of an annual community health fair in the Dixwell neighborhood, and the expansion of our long running programs, HPREP and YSEP

We have recently teamed up with Yale New Haven Hospital's Minority Housestaff Organization, the Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion (MORE), Yale's La Casa Cultural, and others for programming aimed at encouraging and supporting the efforts of diverse members from all faces of our campus.

Established in 1964 by the medical students from Howard University and Meharry medical schools, the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) boasts over 50 years of committed service to communities. It continues to advocate for improved, culturally sensitive health care services and education for neglected or underserved

populations.

The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) was founded in 1987, and has since worked on providing a voice for underrepresented minority students, promoting the recruitment and retention of Latino medical students, and promoting volunteerism in the Latino community.
