Youth Science Enrichment Program
The Youth Science Enrichment Program aims to coordinate ‘hands on’ learning activities involving elementary students in the New Haven public school system through the following activities:
-
Increase minority elementary students’ exposure to science
-
Motivate students to seek careers in scientific disciplines
-
Improve student performance in science classes
-
Introduce students to positive role models in the science fields through mentorship
-
Make learning a more enjoyable and interactive experience.
We don't just want the students to be exposed to health professions students, but to also build relationships. In order to provide the students with individual attention each class will be led by two student teachers with two group mentors. This organization enables bonding and relationship building between the fourth graders and the health professions students who may serve as role models for them.
This year, YSEP started on September 30, 2016 at Hill Central Elementary School with a session introducing the fourth grade students to the musculoskeletal system. Our session on the respiratory system was canceled because of school closure due to inclement weather; we have since had a session introducing the students to the sensory systems of the human body. Future sessions will cover the cardiovascular, digestive, and neurological systems, and a later session will be dedicated to introducing the students to careers in the health sciences. Volunteers have shown enthusiasm and reported positive feedback thus far. Our closing ceremony will take place on December 2, 2016; it will be more of a comprehensive review of what the students have learned, and students will receive some reward for the participation in the program.
